What To Do About A Sticking Starter Motor

Jan 18, 2007 Vincent Ciulla

We have someone with a problem with a starter and someone who has two Pontiacs with the same problem.

Question: Starter Motor Problems

Starter turns over motor. Motor starts. Starter drive sounds like it doesn't disengage completely. I also took the starter out of mounting hole grounded it and it works fine. Please help

Answer:

It sounds like the return spring in the starter Bendix, the part that actually engages the flywheel, is too weak to retract it when the engine starts. About all you can do is replace the whole starter.

Question: Two Pontiac's; One Problem

My 1986 and my 1996 Pontiac's power seat will go forward but not back. If somebody moves the thing forward some more I won't be able to get in the cars.

Thanks,

FJH

Answer:

The only thing common to both vehicles would be the power seat switch. So that would be right at the top of my list of suspects. The Forward/Back Motor has a 2-pin connector. By applying power to the motor connector pins it should run in one direction. By reversing the power it should run in the opposite direction. If it does then the motor itself is good.

Connect a voltmeter to the harness side of the motor connector and press the seat switch forward. You should get a battery voltage reading. Now press the seat switch back and the voltage should reverse itself. If not then the switch is most likely the problem. Check the wiring for breaks and shorts, if none are found then I would say the switch itself is bad.
