Question: Plymouth Voyager Transmission Question

Reading an e-mail posted, I understand you may have an insight to my car's transmission problem. 1996 Plymouth Voyager 3.3 liter and I don't know what the transmission model is. Mileage 110,000. The problem: All gears but Low and Reverse work.

What happened when it went: I was driving at 55 mph for almost two hours when suddenly the engine was racing because the gear just stopped working. It was like I had placed the transmission into neutral and my foot was still on the pedal. I of course was in the cruising high gear. I was loosing speed quickly and started to pull over and as I did I tried dropping it into low and it worked. So I continued on at a much slower rate of speed and was able to travel another 100 miles to get home.

At home I tried each gear and none worked but low and reverse. Days later, after letting it sit and from cold I placed it into high gear and it went forward for a couple of seconds and then cut out to low again. From then on it never worked again and has been sitting in our driveway ever since. I asked two regular mechanics, which did not work on transmissions, and one said he had heard that there may some external device or solenoid that may be at fault or as most everybody says, it's shot. I thought before I sell it for scrap I should settle it once and for all. I'm hoping you might shed some light on the problem.

The transmission blew a pump back at 70,000 miles and was under warranty so that didn't cost us but it never seemed quite right after that. Shifting was different but it never slipped. If I go to any transmission shops around here they of course need money for them to break down for an estimate and the car at this point is hardly worth $1,000.00. It's still in pretty shape. No scratches or dents. Interior is very nice and nothing is broken looking however a few little things need repair.

The engine is perfect. Always starts and has never given us any problems short of a water pump and A/C work which I consider regular maintenance. It's the best engine I have ever owned.

Do you think I have a prayer on it being something on the outside of the transmission? I'm asking you because so far I don't know whom to ask.

Thanks for anything you might have for me.

Trace

Answer:

Well Trace, the chances of it being something outside the transmission are small. But I would suggest checking for DTC's to see if any are stored. You can go to Diagnostic Trouble Codes - 1996 Chrysler to see how to access the codes. If there are no codes stored then you're looking at an internal transmission problem.
