How to Fix a 2001 Chevrolet ImpalaA Look Back At A Vehicle Problem With A Possible SolutionThis weekly Q&A session answers your questions about cars and trucks. This week revisits a 2001 Chevrolet Impala that was sluggish and had no power.
Question: 2001 Chevrolet ImpalaVincent, I read an article you wrote on Nov 12, 2007 How to Fix a 2001 Chevrolet Impala, Repair Advice for Sluggish Chevy Impala with no Power. I have the exact same problem with my 2001 Impala (109,000 miles). I was wondering if you ever heard back from the person who asked you that question. Did they fix the problem and what did for them? Any help would be great. Tony Answer:I don't usually get any feedback for my answers as to how accurate my diagnosis is or what was actually found and what kind of repair was required. I can't tell you how much I would like to get that feedback and solutions since it would be an immense help to others such as yourself who have the same or similar problems. That is the case with the particular question in the article you refer to. I never heard back from them as to what was found out to be the problem. However if they followed my advice they almost surely did find the problem. I strongly urge anyone I help out to provide feedback to me and the others who read this column so we can improve the accuracy and possibly expand on what has already been written about the problem(s). Question: 2001 Chevrolet ImpalaVincent, Replace the catalytic converter is the solution to the article on Nov 12, 2007 How to Fix a 2001 Chevrolet Impala, Repair Advice for Sluggish Chevy Impala with no Power. The catalytic converter is clogged or plugged up. Tony Answer:Thank you Tony, this is the kind of feedback that I was talking about above. Catalytic converters on GM vehicles quite often clog up creating a restriction in the exhaust and make the engine loose power and become sluggish. Depending on the extent of the obstruction this power loss can be gradual or quick. In my original answer I recommended the person use a vacuum gauge to try and diagnose the problem and if they did so they would have found the catalytic was, indeed, clogged. Engine Testing With A Vacuum Gauge. I'm very glad you gave me this feedback, not only because it confirms the accuracy of my advice but also provides information that can be very valuable to others with a similar problem. That's all for this week. Feel free to browse the archives for past topics and other resources. And, as always, if you are stuck and need an immediate answer you can always call Vince on the phone.
