A 1988 GMC Van with high NOx emissions and a Nissan Pathfinder that's eating starters.
Question: GMC Fails The TestHi Vince, I have a 1988 GMC Van with the original engine. This year it failed Maryland Emission test. The NOx output is 3.9 PPM while the state standard is 3.0 PPM. It passed all of the other standards. The exhaust also smokes a little when I start it up sometimes. I tuned it up. I replaced the thermostat. I have also replaced the gas recirculation valve. The vehicle also spots a little oil when I park it. I spoke to my mechanic and he told me not to bring it to him. The engine has 176,000 miles. Should I replace the engine or is there anything I can due to pass the test, than I can replace the engine at another time. I may have to do it myself. The engine still has plenty of power. Two spark plugs looked a little oily. Answer:NOx emissions are kept in check by the EGR system. The EGR reduces combustion chambers temperature thus reducing NOx formation. Since you replaced the EGR valve I would check for restrictions or blockage in the EGR lines. I'm concerned about the oily spark plugs. If oil is getting into the cylinders that will make passing an emissions test difficult. I would do a wet/dry compression test to see if the oil is getting in through the valve seals or up past the rings. Question: Nissan Pathfinder Eating StartersHave a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder. Have replaced 3 starters and last week it started all over again, when you turn the key you get nothing but a clicking sound. After turning the key several times it will start, but finally it will not start at all. Was told that the starter relay switch might be bad if so where is it and how much to buy one? Thanks for your help, Don Answer:There is a black/purple wire at the starter solenoid. With the key in the START position you should have power there. If you do then you have a bad starter. If you have been getting starters from the same place, I would suggest going to a different parts store and get a different brand of starter. I have seen bad runs of starters, alternators and other such parts from a particular rebuilder. Changing the parts source will correct this and get you back on the road.
