Ford Taurus alternator replacement and an inline transmission filter for a Nissan Altima.
Question: Ford Taurus Alternator ReplacementI want to replace the alternator in my 1990 Ford Taurus wagon. According to what I've been able to find out, it's seems almost relatively simple. I understand that the wiper fluid compartment and the anti-freeze compartment should lift out once I loosen the screw that holds it down, I should unplug the alternator, loosen the alternator belt tension screw and the bolts holding the alternator in place. Is there anything else I need to know before I attempt this repair myself? I was wondering about the wiper fluid/anti-freeze compartments, how careful do I need to be when lifting them? Are there any hoses I need to maneuver around or lift out of the way while the alternator is being replaced? What signs of trouble do I want to be on the lookout for? During and after the replacement is completed? Please advise. Thanks, Anitra Answer:Replacing the alternator on that vehicle is probably one of the easiest jobs you can do. Before doing anything you need to remove the NEGATIVE (-) battery terminal. Then you can disconnect the wiring to the alternator without fear of shorting something out. You shouldn't have to move too much out of the way. If you do, just use some care and a little common sense to move what you need to. There is a hose going from the bottom of the coolant reserve tank to the radiator so you need to watch out for that. The washer tank has the washer pump and hose attached to it so you need to take due care with them. You should be able to just move them out of the way without actually having to disconnect them. Question: Nissan Altima Transmission FilterAccording to the manual the Nissan Altima doesn't have a serviceable transmission filter. Is there any reason not to install an in-line filter in the fluid return from the cooler? Thank you for the help. Regards, Jim Answer:You are correct in that it doesn't have a transmission filter you can replace. There is no reason why you couldn't put an inline filter in for the transmission. I would suggest putting it inline between the transmission and the transmission cooler.
