Ford Escort And A Ford Carburetor2001 Ford Escort And Ford Carburetor QuestionsA Ford Escort with headlight problems and a couple of Ford Carburetor Questions.
Question: 2001 Ford EscortHeadlights on a 2001 Ford Escort will not stay on. When I first start the car and turn the lights on it is fine. But when I put my turn signal on to go left or right that's when the lights go completely off. I have to play with the handle to get the lights to come back on. But in the process I am flashing people in front of me and the passersby. I can only use my high beams if I am pushing the handle forward. But when I pull the handle back to keep the high beams on; they will not stay on and the indicator doesn't show on my dash. My mileage is 87,499. My blinkers work and it is not the light bulbs. Answer: The multifunction switch needs to be replaced. It's died and gone to multifunction switch heaven. Question: Ford Carburetor QuestionsMy son recently bought a older Ford of some kind with a 302 in it and it wasn't running too good, so he decided to tear into it to see what was up, I guess it was running rich or something as such. Well he tore into the carburetor and pulled the venturi cluster, I saw this piece of the carburetor in a book diagram so that's how I know what it's called, out of the Autolite 2 barrel carburetor (2100 I think) and from what he has shown me, both the venturis are split down the sides along the row of holes in the tubes. I am not a mechanic. I have no idea of how a venturi works. So he has this other Motorcraft carburetor that has the venturis in it that seem to be good, I guess. Now he asks me if he can use the venturi cluster from the Motorcraft carburetor, both venturis have only one hole at the top compared to the broken ones (Autolite) with holes all down the sides, in the carburetor, put a new rebuild kit in it and run it. Can this be done and will the thing run or can a person buy a new venturi cluster to replace the broken original one and if it is possible where can he go to buy it, a local auto parts store? I haven't got a clue. Both carburetors have the model information tags on them. All help would be appreciated, but please in 3rd grade terms. Gene Minot, ND Answer: You can read this to see how a Venturi works. It would have been very helpful to know what year Ford these carburetors came out of, or at least the model numbers of both. I could then look them up in my books and see if the venturis will interchange. I'm looking at some diagrams of the Motorcraft 2150 carburetor and the Autolite 2100D carburetor and it looks like they may interchange. The only way I could be absolutely sure is to look at both of them side by side. Since there is a question about the internal parts, and the fact that rebuilding a carburetor only works about half the time, might I suggest getting a rebuilt unit from NAPA or AutoZone? They aren't all that expensive and you would be sure that the modifications to it that came about over the years to correct certain driveability problems were done.
