You may be surprised to learn that newer cars have up to 50 microprocessors or sensors, and each one has its own software.
Computers control functions under the hood and inside the cabin. Inside of the car, there are temperature controls that can create two different climats, one for the driver and another for the passenger.
Under the hood is a harsher environment. Dirt, oil, heat and cold can have a devastating effect on the engine. Computers give you advanced diagnostics. They can regulate the intake of fuel, and lower emissions, giving you better gas mileage.
Microprocessors can be programmed to give you driving directions to many of your destinations.
Security is a serious concern for many people. Some of the more expensive luxury cars have keypad entry along with a key. If the driver does not enter in the correct code, the door will not open. There also is microprocessor that can sense alcohol and will keep the driver from actually driving the car while intoxicated.
Other security features are self inflating tires. The sensors monitor and regulate tire pressure. Others control the air bags in case of an emergency. They can also call for help if you have an accident. Your automatic car starter has software that can be reprogrammed. They can detect and alert the driver if a blinker or other lights that may be out.
Sometime in the near future, there may be sensors along the highways and roads that can guide your car automatically and give the effect of the car driving itself. Can you imagine sitting in the driver's seat reading the newspaper on your way to work?
Who knows what the future of the automobile will be, with computers, maybe your car will fly some day!
