A 1997 Dodge Neon Crankshaft Position Sensor and a 1998 Dodge Neon that won't start.

Question: Dodge Neon Crankshaft Position Sensor

I have a 1998 Dodge Neon. It won't start. I was told it was the Crankshaft Position Sensor. If it were faulty would the engine crank over? Where is the sensor located?

Answer:

Depending on which engine you have, it could be in the block above and to the left of the oil filter (2.4 liter engine), it could be directly above the oil filter (2.0 liter engine) or next to the distributor (2.5 liter V-6 engine).

Yes, the engine would crank even with a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Question: Dodge Neon Died, Won't Start

Dear Sir, I found your address on line. Please help me with this problem that I have. I have a 1997 Dodge Neon with 100,000. I was driving home from work when the car stops in the middle of the street. I tried to start the engine with no luck. I was able to have the car pushed home. My father had the coil pack tested. It tested the same as a new coil pack. He pulled out the spark plug and wires and noticed they were all cover with oil.

The oil level is good. No major oil leaking anywhere. The oil was clear not dirty that was found on the plugs and wires. I tried to start the car the next day but no luck. It sounds like it's not firing. I previously had a transmission installed by a local garage the prior week. What do you think would make the car stop while driving down the street?

Thank you so much for your time,

Jasmine

  • Automatic transmission

Answer:

First off Jasmine, don't call me sir. I work for a living. From what you describe it sounds like you don't have any spark. The first thing I would check is the Auto Shut Down (ASD) relay. It is fairly common for them to go bad. It is located in the underhood Power Distribution Center (PDC). There is a guide in the cover to tell you exactly which one it is. You can try swapping it with another relay with the same part number to see if the vehicle starts.

P.J. :
if u have the DOHC engine the crank sensor is on front of engine right side of belt drive pully. have seen these get grounded with metal particals from another source and because its magnetic the build up of these metalic particals can cause it not to start. particals can come from a drive pully or any thing that gives off metal shavings due to excess wearing.Hope this is helpfull P.J

Hello,
I have a Dodge Neon 1997 Engine DOHC 2.0L and now my car is stopping unexpectedly quite often. Sometimes in the middle of street during rush hour and it's really annoying and embaracing. I checked the PCM and I got the codes 12 & 11. Can you please help me to troubleshoot the problem. I went to the mechanic and had some tune-up but still it's stopping. I thought that might be the fuel filter or fuel pump so I put the Penzoil fuel injection cleaning system last night to find out how it goes on my mechanics advice. Please help.
Thanks.
