The Jeep is an off-roader and overheating and the Acura RL is looking for the parking brake adjuster.

Question: Off Roading Jeep

Hi, My name is John and I have been building a Jeep for off roading for a while now. While it is now drivable, there are some issues I am not sure how to fix. The Jeep has a 4 bolt main Chevy 350 (about an 85 model or so) and my alternator belt only lasts a few weeks.

I am guessing something is out of alignment, but not sure if I need new pulleys, or a new bracket or what. This is causing other problems because the belt is just getting ground down and all of the pieces are clogging my Air Cleaner. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. One other thing too is that after only about 15 minutes, the temp is already up really high on the engine, how can I solve this? (New radiator, no thermostat, etc.?)

Regards,

John Pratt

Answer: I think it's quite obvious you have a pulley misalignment problem here. Now, Let's Get This Straight...

While this article is for serpentine belts this part also applies to regular V type belts.

As for the overheating(?) we need to check the actual coolant temperature. Remove the radiator cap and put a thermometer inside the radiator. Start and let the engine idle. Watch the temperature. The temperature should be within 5% or so or the thermostats rated temperature. If it is, and stays there, then you probably have a bad coolant temperature sensor or temperature gauge.

If it is overheating then the first thing to do is replace the thermostat and see if that fixes the problem. If not let the engine run and get hot, then shut it off. Feel the core of the radiator and see if there are any 'cold' spots. If there are then it's clogged and needs to be taken to a radiator shop to me rodded out or core replaced.

If it feels uniformly hot, it will be warmer near the inlet and gradually cooler towards the outlet, then you're probably looking at a worn out water pump.

Question: 2000 Acura RL

I have a 2000 Acura RL. It appears that the parking brake adjustment must be inside the center console. Can you advise the best way to get access to the adjustment nut? I can't seem to find an access panel. Surely there must be a readily accessible way to get to it without disassembling the console!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you,

Jeff Hatchner

Answer: Actually Jeff, the adjuster is underneath the vehicle. If you look under there you will see the point where the left and right parking brake cables join. The parking brake adjuster is at that point.

Before adjusting the parking brake adjust the rear drum brakes first. When the rear drum brakes are adjusted correctly that will also adjust the parking brake. If more adjustment is necessary, pull the parking brake handle up three clicks. Then adjust the parking brake cables until the rear brakes lock up. Lock down the adjuster and release the parking brake handle. Proper adjustment is five to eight clicks.
