A Ford Box Truck losing power and a 1995 Acura Integra that's choking up at speed.

Question: Ford Box Truck

I have a Ford box truck with 351w. It knocks above 50 mph when vacuum is between 10" and 20". No knock at acceleration or when decelerating. Retarding base timing to 4°atdc eradicates it but it has no power. Max advance is only 15°btdc. Is it too lean at cruise? What do the metering rods in the mc 2150 do and how adjust?

Answer: When I see lean drivabilty problems with Fords, the first thing I do is clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF). They are suseptible to dirt and causing all kinds of problems.

What you need to do is get a can of tuner cleaner from Radio Shack. Then remove the MAF and clean the inside with the tuner cleaner. Be very careful, there is a small wire that you do not want to break. If it breaks you'll have to replace the whole MAF. Let it air dry fo 30 minutes or so then put it back in. That should take care of the problem. Do NOT use carburetor or brake cleaner. They leave a residue behind that will compound the problem.

Question: 1995 Acura Integra Choking Up

Hey there Vincent. I have a LS 5 speed and today, I full throttled my car. As my rpm was moving towards redline (6800 rpm) the needle stopped at 5900 rpm causing me to either let go of the gas or shift gears. The car doesn't go past 5900 now for some reason. It will rev then once it hits 5900, the car will seem like it redlines and will go no further.

In other words, it seems like the car chokes out at 5900 but the car doesn't die out or anything. I never encountered this problem. The last thing I have changed on my car was the fuel filter last week and when I full throttled it, there was no problem. Do you know what can be my problem?

Answer: What I would suggest is checking fuel pressure and fuel volume. Either one will cause the problem you describe. Fuel pressure specifications are:

Fuel Pressure * (275-324 kPa) 40-47 psi

Fuel Pressure ** (215-245 kPa) 31-36 psi

* Measured with engine idling and vacuum hose to pressure regulator disconnected and plugged.

** Measured with engine idling and vacuum hose to pressure regulator connected.

General rule of thumb for fuel volume is 2.3 quarts per minute.

If that checks out good then I would look at the secondary ignition system for the problem. Distributor cap, distributor rotor, ignition wires and spark plugs. I highly recommend using NGK ZFR5F-11 gapped at 0.039 - 0.043 in
