A 1999 Cadillac Deville with an ABS problem and a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder that shifts rough in cold weather.

Question: Cadillac Deville ABS Problem

Hi Vince, I'll keep this short. Recently, about a year ago, my 1999 Cadillac Deville ABS and traction control lights come on for no reason. It usually happens when the car is accelerating from a stop. The ABS pump comes on, and the engine speed is limited, as though the system detects a spinning wheel (on hot summer days!!!), then the lights come on. The dash reads "Service Stability System".

I ran the codes and it told me that I had a right front wheel over spin error. Thinking this was the right front wheel bearing (that is where the ABS sensor is located) I changed the wheel bearing. It did not help at all. Wires from the bearings seem fine. Could it be my PCM? Any other thoughts?

Thanks,

Answer:

There was a TSB, 00-05-25-003 issued in September 2000 concerning this problem. A new wiring harness was developed to correct this situation. It is P/N 12167672.

Question: Nissan Pathfinder Shifting Problem

Hello, I have a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder with a 5 speed manual transmission. Directly after replacing the transmission oil (80w-90 GL-4), it is now very choppy when shifting between 1st and 2nd gear when cold, but perfect after approximately 15-20 minutes of operation. The oil that went in is exactly as specified in the owner's manual. I used the Car Quest brand, which I am told, is made by Valvoline. Before I drain it again, do you have any ideas/thoughts as to what's going on? The transmission was perfect the day before the oil change?

Thank you, and best regards,

Gary

Answer:

This is a common problem under these conditions. In cold weather the 80W-90 gets too thick for proper cold shifting. When it warms up it starts to shift normally. There are two possible solutions, live with it, it's not hurting anything or drain the 80W-90 and add one quart of ATF and fill the rest with the 80W-90. You can use this as a winter blend or just leave it in all year round.

I know people who make this blend put it in in the winter, drain it in the and save it to use next winter.
