A 1997 Cadillac Catera with an electrical problem and a 1997 Jeep Cherokee that won't shift in and out of 4WD and has brake shoe problems.

Question: 1997 Jeep Cherokee

Hi, two questions about my Sons 1997 Jeep Cherokee, first the car will not go into 4WD and no light indicator to say so. Any suggestions?

Also he has a rear brake problem. The rear brake shoes were cracked so we replaced them 3 months ago and the brakes started squeaking so I checked them and they cracked again. What's going on here? Can you give some advice on these problems?

Thanks,

Mike

Answer: You have to be below 3 mph in order to shift into 4WD High, 4WD Low or back to 2WD. So that would be one possibility. If you drive the vehicle in 4WD on a dry paved surface you may have driveline torque preventing shifting. The other possibility is the external linkage may be dry and binding. Lubricate, repair or replace the linkage bushings or tighten the linkage.

Also, Make sure the transfer case is filled to the fill hole with Dexron or Mopar-Mercon ATF.

I would have to see the brake shoes to see if the cracks are normal stress type "cracks" or not. I'm going to assume you mean they cracked in the sense that the crack goes clear down to the web of the brake shoe.

1997, 1998 and 1999 Jeep Cherokees had an axle shaft which does not have a correct size brake drum pilot flange. If this is the case when you step on the brake the rear brake drum moves making noise and could damage the brake shoes.

To correct this you would need to install a new axle shaft(s), part number 05018393AA, as necessary to correct this.

Question: 1997 Cadillac Catera

Problem; on the steering column when I pull back on the signal lever to quick flash the HIGH beams my oil pressure and voltage gauge go dead and the idiot lights come on. Once the lever is released after a few seconds the idiot lights go off and the (2) gages power back up. I’m thinking the turn signal switch is bad?

Answer: I think I would have to agree with you on this.
