1995 Dodge Ram 3500 V-10How To Remove the Harmonic Balancer/Flywheel Pulley on a Dodge V-10Your auto repair questions answered about a replacing a crankshaft pulley on a 1995 Dodge Ram 3500 V-10.
This weekly Q&A session answers your questions about cars and trucks. This week explores a 1995 Dodge Ram 3500 that needs a new crankshaft pulley. Question: 1995 Dodge Ram 3500 V-10I need to change the harmonic balancer and can't figure out how to get the clutch fan off. I need advice or a manual download. Also, any advice on changing the harmonic balancer would be greatly appreciated. I'm on the side of the road and have just had enough for part. What else might I need? I have a puller. Answer:The fan/fan drive assembly is taken off the water pump by rotating the mounting nut counterclockwise (as viewed from front). So you will need to get a wrench and hold the water pump so it doesn't turn while you remove the mounting nut. There is nothing special about removing the harmonic balancer/flywheel pulley. All you need to do is remove the front crankshaft bolt, remove the harmonic balancer/flywheel pulley and replace it with a new one. There is a Technical Service Bulletin out on the harmonic balancer/flywheel pulley, however:
Note: This information applies to vehicles equipped with an 8.0 liter V-10 engine. Symptom/ConditionSome vehicles may exhibit a condition where the accessory drive belt becomes damaged on the inboard edge. Customers may explain the problem as belt noise. This may be caused by the crank pulley loosening on the crank and causing a misalignment. DiagnosisInspect the accessory drive belt for fraying or unusual wear on the inboard edge. If wear is noted, inspect the crank pulley bolt for looseness and the crank pulley for misalignment. Sight the crankshaft pulley with other accessory drives or use a straight edge to detect misalignment. If the crank pulley is misaligned or bolt is loose, perform the Repair Procedure. Parts Required:
Repair ProcedureThis bulletin involves removing the crank pulley bolt, checking the press fit of the pulley, reinstalling the bolt using thread locker, and replacing the accessory drive belt.
Note: Drain the coolant into a clean drain pan.
Note: If the crank pulley damper is loose (no press fit) replace the crank pulley damper with P/N 53020776.
Note: Use a bar to lock the pulley in place while tightening.
And that should do it for you. That's all for this week. Feel free to browse the archives for past topics and other resources. And, as always, if you are stuck and need an immediate answer you can always call Vince on the phone.
