This weekly Q&A session answers your questions about cars and trucks. This week explores an Acura Integra RS that has a rebuilt engine that won't start.

Question: 1988 Acura Integra RS

Mr. Vince, I have a 1988 Acura Integra RS with 340,000 miles but still puts out 30 mpg. With today's gas prices I thought it would be worth it to overhaul the engine myself. I'm just stumped; I could not get the engine to run after all that work. I lined up all 4 plugs and saw good spark, compression was 135 to 140 on all cylinders, lined up all injectors out the intake header but still secured to fuel rail and saw a spray of fuel. Fuel pressure was measured to be 34 psi.

When the engine is cranked all 4 injectors sprayed at the same time once and then in a sequence but it stops spraying after only 2 cycles. But plugs continued to spark in seq. while the engine was cranking. I checked timing / positions of camshafts pulleys and crankshaft pulley to be correct. I also replaced 1.25 yrs old gas left in the tank; it took me that long. I don't know what I forgot to do. I need to save gas money. Please I need help.

Thanks,

Jino

Answer:

There's an old saying in this business; "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" It's not clear why you decided to rebuild the engine but if it was running good and you were getting 30 mpg, then there is no indication it needed a rebuild. But, be that as it may let's see what we can do for you.

If you get only two or three seconds of fuel then the problem is with the injection system. That seems to be confirmed by the good compression and good spark.

If the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) does not get a signal the engine is cranking or running, it will shut the injectors off after two or three seconds. There is a fuse in the fuse box for the starter signal. This tells the PCM the engine is cranking. If this fuse is blown, the PCM will not fire the injectors. The PCM gets this signal from the TDC/Crank Angle Sensor. If the TDC/CAS is bad then the PCM will think the engine is not turning over and turn the injectors off.

Another thing to check is the EFI Main Relay. This has always been the weak link in the Honda EFI system. There is a good article and troubleshooting guide to help you check it out. Honda Main Relays.

That's all for this week. Feel free to browse the archives for past topics and other resources. And, as always, if you are stuck and need an immediate answer you can always call Vince on the phone.
